Where Is Grand Canyon National Park?
Grand Canyon National Park is located in northwestern Arizona. It includes approximately 277 miles of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands.
The closest airport is Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN). It is located in Tusayan, Arizona, seven miles from the South Rim and two miles from the park entrance.
What Makes Grand Canyon National Park Spectacular?
The enormous Grand Canyon is a mile deep and, in some spots, 18 miles wide! Some scientists believe it is almost two billion years old! How was this beautiful masterpiece formed? It is the result of a combination of geologic events. This included the action of plate tectonics along with erosion caused by the Colorado River and tributary streams. And, the Grand Canyon is actually getting wider and deeper every day because of this erosion!

The Grand Canyon consists of layers of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock. Each of these layers "tells" a story about the environmental history.
Interestingly, scientists are still investigating certain aspects of the Grand Canyon's formation. They are not all in agreement with one another.
What Are the Weather and Climate Like?

The lowest temperature on record was -22 °F; this was on the North Rim on February 1, 1985. The highest temperature on record was 120 °F; this was at Phantom Ranch on several different dates during the summer months.
The hottest month to visit Grand Canyon National Park on average is in July. The average high temperature on the South Rim is 84 °F; on the North Rim it is 77 °F, and in the Inner Canyon it is 106 °F!
The coldest month to visit Grand Canyon National Park on average is in January. The average low temperature on the South Rim is 18 °F; on the North Rim it is 16 °F, and in the Inner Canyon it is 36 °F.
The wettest month to visit Grand Canyon National Park on average is in August. The average precipitation on the South Rim is 2.25”; on the North Rim it is 2.85”; and in the Inner Canyon it is 1.4”. However, on the North Rim, the highest monthly average of precipitation is in February; the accumulation is 3.22”.
In terms of snowfall, the North Rim receives the heaviest amount, averaging 142” per year. There was a record of 272.8” in 1978! The South Rim averages 58” of snow per year; and Phantom Ranch less than 1”.
