Where Are the Pyramids at Giza Located?


The Pyramids at Giza include the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes, and the Great Sphinx of Giza.


The site is located within the country of Egypt at the edges of the western desert, approximately 5.6 miles west of the Nile River in the city of Giza, about 8 miles southwest of Cairo, the capital city. Egypt is located in the northeastern corner of Africa, linking itself with the Middle East.


Giza, Egypt is serviced by the Cairo International Airport ("CAI"). CAI is located in Cairo and is about 15 miles from the center of Giza.


What Makes the Pyramids at Giza Spectacular?


The Great Pyramid at Giza also known as the Pyramid of Khufu, is the oldest and largest of the pyramids within the Giza pyramid complex. It is the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the only one to remain largely intact. Some Egyptologists believe it was built in the 26th century B.C. during a period of around 27 years.


The Great Pyramid covers 13 acres and is believed to contain more than 2 million stone blocks that weigh from two to thirty tons each! For more than 4,000 years, the Great Pyramid of Giza had the status of being the tallest building in the world; it wasn't until the 19th century of our common era that another building was erected that was taller!

The question of how the pyramids were built is still shrouded with some mystery. It has been suggested that the workforce used for the construction consisted of slave labor; others believe thousands of conscript laborers were used. Scientists also believe that log rollers and sledges were utilized to move the stones into place. This is amazing considering they didn't have the assistance of modern tools or surveying equipment!
